AWS Unveils Cloud Infrastructure Region in Zurich, Switzerland

AWS

AWS has launched its new AWS Europe cloud region in Zurich, Switzerland. Developers, startups, SMEs, and enterprises, along with government, educational, and nonprofit institutions, will now have more options for hosting their applications in Swiss data centers. They’re also enabled to provide end users with cloud services from Switzerland while utilizing AWS technologies here to spur innovation.

Through the new AWS Europe (Zurich) Region, AWS intends to invest about 5.9 billion Swiss francs ($5.9 billion) in Switzerland over the course of the next 15 years. This investment covers capital charges for building data centers, operational costs for maintaining facilities and paying for utilities, as well as the acquisition of products and services from local vendors.

AWS Regions are composed of Availability Zones that place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations. AWS now has 90 Availability Zones spread over 28 geographical locations with the inauguration of the AWS Europe (Zurich) Region. There are also plans to construct 21 further Availability Zones and seven other AWS Regions in Australia, Canada, India, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, and Thailand.

“From startups and midsized businesses to enterprises and government organizations, thousands of commercial, nonprofit, and public sector organizations across Switzerland are engaging their end users and growing globally with the support of AWS,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS. “With the new AWS Europe (Zurich) Region, we have seven AWS Regions and 21 Availability Zones across Europe in Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Milan, Paris, Stockholm, and now Zurich. This is a continuation of our investment to support customers of all kinds, help startups scale and grow, enable technical skills development, and help organizations create cloud-powered applications that reinvent services for end users.”

Three Availability Zones

The seventh AWS Region in Europe, AWS Europe (Zurich), is made up of three Availability Zones. The distance between Availability Zones supports customers’ business continuity while keeping them close enough to offer minimal latency for high availability applications that utilize several Availability Zones. Each Availability Zone is connected by redundant, ultra-low latency networks and has separate power, cooling, and physical security.

Clients of AWS that prioritize high availability can increase fault tolerance by designing their applications to run across different Availability Zones. With the opening of the AWS Europe (Zurich) Region, local clients with data residency requirements would be able to store their data safely in Switzerland and benefit from even lower latency throughout the country.
