China Unicom, the nation’s second-biggest telecom operator by subscriber numbers, has launched a new cloud brand, called “Wo-Cloud”, a full-service cloud hosting and big data service. In May 2012, China Unicom was the first telecom carrier in China to offer cloud hosting solutions to enterprises.
China Unicom’s Wo-Cloud V2.0 product series, based on OpenStack, includes cloud hosting, cloud storage and Software-as-as-Service (SaaS) solutions. The services are aimed at government bodies and enterprise organizations. The cloud services will be delivered by China Unicom from data centers in Hohhot and Langfang.
The Hong Kong-based company has launched the new cloud hosting offering at a time when big players from abroad have entered the fast growing Chinese cloud hosting market. Recently, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and IBM joined the Chinese cloud competition, whereas Microsoft and Rackspace both offer cloud services in China through their Hong Kong data center presence.
