OnApp Announces Ability for Cloud Hosting Providers to Share Compute Resources

OnApp, a global Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provider, has announced the ability for cloud hosting service providers to share compute resources (CPU, RAM and storage) through its OnApp Federation, so that their customers can deploy applications at locations all over the world, on demand.

The OnApp Federation is a network of 167 cloud hosting service providers offering capacity at 170 locations, in 113 cities, across 43 countries. The new global compute capability is still in a pilot/preview phase where 50 OnApp cloud solutions providers are lined up to provide compute capacity for the OnApp Federation, with nine locations available for testing today in the US, UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Russia and Belgium.

OnApp expects the number of test locations to grow at least ten-fold in the next 12 months. General Availability will follow later this year, enabling federated compute for all OnApp cloud hosting service providers.

Wholesale cloud hosting

“By connecting hundreds of OnApp cloud hosting providers around the world, we’re helping each one of them break through the scale barrier,” said Ditlev Bredahl.

The new global compute capability is built on OnApp Market, a wholesale cloud hosting marketplace for service providers. Service providers use OnApp Market to browse locations on the OnApp Federation, see prices and SLA data, and make any mix of locations available to their customers in real time, alongside their own. The OnApp Federation and OnApp Market will support other cloud platforms in future releases.

“Now service providers can be as big and diverse or as local and niche as they want to be, without spending a dime on new infrastructure,” said Ditlev Bredahl, CEO of OnApp. “By connecting hundreds of OnApp cloud hosting providers around the world, we’re helping each one of them break through the scale barrier, using the OnApp Federation to host customer applications exactly where they are needed, on infrastructure with the right performance, price and service level. And they can do it on demand with no CAPEX. This is what cloud is supposed to look like: true global coverage, pay-as-you-go, and real diversity.”

OnApp will be exhibiting at HostingCon 2014 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida from Monday, June 16th through Wednesday, June 18th. To meet with OnApp and demo federated compute, visit the OnApp #VIPLounge in room #D232 and the OnApp booth #806.
