DE-CIX Barcelona Goes Live with 30 Connected Networks

DE-CIX, one of the world’s largest Internet Exchange (IX) operators, has launched DE-CIX Barcelona – a new interconnection platform in the Catalan city. The new interconnection platform in the Catalonian capital is fully operational.

DE-CIX Barcelona provides peering and private interconnection services, as well as cloud exchange services via its Apollon platform. It also provides additional connectivity to key public clouds like as Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, IBM Bluemix, and Oracle.

Following agreements on availability in the bitNAP and Equinix premium enabled sites, DE-CIX’s interconnection services will now also be available at the EdgeConneX data center in Barcelona.

Together with its other IXs in Lisbon, Madrid, Palermo, and Marseille, DE-CIX is developing one of the biggest neutral interconnection ecosystems in Southern Europe with this newest extension to Barcelona. In Southern Europe, all DE-CIX IXs serve domestic markets as well as new European gateways to South and North America, Africa, and Asia. On top of that, DE-CIX Barcelona is connected to DE-CIX Madrid and Marseille, as well as one of the world’s largest IXs, DE-CIX Frankfurt, via which the firm is opening up one of the world’s largest cloud exchanges to Catalan businesses.

“Barcelona is among the top 10 economic centers in Europe by GDP and is also the most promising emerging digital hub, thanks to the great potential of the submarine cables to be deployed in the near future,” said Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX International.

Nearly 30 network operators (carriers), Internet service providers (ISPs), content providers, and corporate networks have already begun exchanging traffic and utilizing DE-CIX Barcelona’s interconnection and cloud services. Global firms like Google and Microsoft, as well as local institutions like the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Centre de Telecomunicacions I Tecnologies de la Informació, are among them (CTTI).

“Barcelona is among the top 10 economic centers in Europe by GDP and is also the most promising emerging digital hub, thanks to the great potential of the submarine cables to be deployed in the near future,” said Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX International. “This will bring the entire digital ecosystem of the Iberian Peninsula to a new level.”

The Southern European Interconnection Map, a research undertaken by DE-CIX in partnership with EllaLink and Interxion this year, illustrates Barcelona’s potential as an interconnection center, with bandwidth growing by 35% since 2016. The city is poised to satisfy the standards for reliability, speed, and connectivity expected by infrastructures to ensure optimal network performance with the increased demand for Internet access, with three IXs in service and its first international submarine cable coming in 2023.
