Digital Realty Invests in European Edge Data Center Provider, AtlasEdge

Global data center colocation provider Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR) has made a strategic minority equity investment in AtlasEdge Data Centres, a European edge data center provider. AtlasEdge provides tailored and ultra-low latency digital infrastructure across Europe via a large network of more than 100 facilities. Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.

AtlasEdge’s edge datacenter assets are positioned near to consumer and corporate end users, at the network’s last-mile edge. The company aims to serve the increasing demand from cloud providers, streaming services and enterprises for high-performance, scalable and secure facilities through which they can deliver low-latency applications and services such as 5G, gaming and IoT.

AtlasEdge was founded in the spring of 2021 as a joint venture between Liberty Global and DigitalBridge. It has a large footprint of over 100 sites across Europe and is one of the continent’s leading edge platforms, delivering “seamless, localized, and ultra-low latency” digital infrastructure to clients.

Given AtlasEdge’s unique last-mile network reach as well as its highly spread reach across Europe, AtlasEdge would be an excellent partner for Digital Realty’s edge approach. As interconnection and other data center solutions move closer to the edge, Digital Realty’s experience building and running large-scale solutions would add value to partnerships for both sides.

Digital Realty will be able to extend the scale of its presence across the continent by offering AtlasEdge locations to its clients. The equity transaction is anticipated to close by the end of the year.

Giuliano Di Vitantonio Named as CEO

We are also pleased that Giuliano, who has been a key contributor to our global strategy, will lead AtlasEdge’s promising growth trajectory going forward.”

Giuliano Di Vitantonio will join AtlasEdge as CEO in January 2022 after serving as Executive Vice President, Strategy & Business Segments at Digital Realty. He also has considerable experience with worldwide clients and sophisticated solutions, having spent 17 years at Hewlett-Packard and four years as Global Vice President of Marketing for Data Center & Cloud at Cisco Systems.

“Over the past 25 years I have been fortunate to experience the evolution of the tech sector from the front line, and I believe the emergence of edge computing represents another great advance for our digital society,” said Guliano Di Vitantonio, incoming CEO, AtlasEdge. “It is fantastic to be part of the coalition developing this exciting opportunity. With the expert backing of Liberty Global and DigitalBridge, as well as the latest strategic partnership with Digital Realty and the collaboration with Zayo – who are truly impressive leaders in their respective fields – I have no doubt that AtlasEdge can deliver the next generation of edge data centers in Europe and help create a new platform for our customers and our partners.”
