DustPhotonics Raises $33M to Fuel Development of its Silicon Photonics Technology

Developer of silicon photonics technology and solutions, DustPhotonics, a company founded in 2017 with offices in Modi’in, Israel and Cupertino, California, has announced new funding totaling $33 million as well as a corporate reorganization.

Silicon photonics technologies allow for high-speed optical connectivity for next-generation data centers, high-performance computing (HPC), 5G networks, sensors, and other datacom applications. The worldwide silicon photonics sector is expected to generate annual revenues of over $3 billion by 2026.

Silicon photonics is promoting a technological platform that uses well-established semiconductor manufacturing processes to create optically integrated circuits rather than electrically integrated circuits. An integrated circuit constructed to carry and modify light rather than electrical signals is known as a silicon photonic system.

This new funding raised by DustPhotonics, totalling $33 million, was led by Greenfield Partners, who join DustPhotonics’ Round B investors Intel Capital, veteran entrepreneur Avigdor Willenz, and others.

Phasing out Transceivers Product Line

“Our disruptive silicon photonics technology addresses key and most challenging problems, creating scalable, cost-effective silicon photonics and driving it as the mainstream solution for the cloud and telecom markets,” said Ronnen Lovinger, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DustPhotonics.

DustPhotonics has also completed an organizational restructure to meet its strategic and business goals. The firm will concentrate its efforts on silicon photonics solutions while its Transceivers product line will be phased out. Ronnen Lovinger, the president of DustPhotonics, has been promoted to CEO as a result of this move. The company’s previous CEO, Ben Rubovitch, has stepped down and will now head the company’s business operations.

“This latest investment and the organizational changes will enable us to take advantage of new business opportunities and to continue focusing on serving our customers’ strategic requirements,” said Ronnen Lovinger, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DustPhotonics. “Our disruptive silicon photonics technology addresses their key and most challenging problems, creating scalable, cost-effective silicon photonics and driving it as the mainstream solution for the cloud and telecom markets. We are thrilled at the continued confidence of our investors in our strategic direction.”

Manufacturing Silicon Photonics Systems

The complexity of developing and manufacturing silicon photonics systems has risen in recent years, owing to exponentially increasing data rates with each generation. To satisfy these demands, DustPhotonics focuses on creating scalable, high-density, low-power, and high-reliability technologies. The company’s InP Laser to Silicon Photonics integration technology would provide considerable value differential, allowing it to handle 800 Gb/s, 1.6Tb/s, CPO, and future products with greater performance.

“With the rapid evolution of the connectivity and silicon optics markets, there is a growing need for innovative technologies,” said Yuda Doron, Managing Partner at Greenfield Partners.DustPhotonics is well positioned at the forefront of silicon photonics technology development and we are excited to take part in their journey.”
