ShopBot is eBay’s AI-based shopping assistant. It’s been powering shopping conversations on Facebook Messenger since 2016 and Google Assistant since 2017. We originally prototyped the Google Assistant integration on Dialogflow, but switched to an in-house solution in order to leverage the full range of ShopBot’s capabilities, access eBay’s entire catalog of over a billion items, and extend to additional channels beyond what Dialogflow supports. The current solution is a Typescript and Node.js service that powers ShopBot natively on multiple channels. It runs exclusively on Google Cloud using Kubernetes, Cloud Functions, and a variety of other services.
