Global colocation provider Equinix has extended its presence into the strategic Indian market through the acquisition of GXP India (GPX Global Systems, Inc.). Included in the $161 million all-cash transaction is a fiber-connected campus in Mumbai with two colocation data centers.
The two data centers in Mumbai, now dubbed Equinix MB1 and MB2, have an initial capacity of 1,350 cabinets, with another 500 cabinets on the way. When completed, the facilities will add over 90,000 square feet of colocation space to Platform Equinix.
Equinix’s Mumbai campus provides a cloud-rich environment with direct connectivity to key cloud services such as Amazon Web Services Direct Connect, Google Cloud Dedicated Interconnect, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect. It also hosts key Internet Exchanges such as AMS-IX India, Extreme IX, Mumbai IX-DECIX, NIXI, and Bharat IX, which allow ISPs, carriers, CDNs, and big organizations to exchange Internet traffic through peering arrangements.
Following the completion of the business integration, Equinix expects to provide a comprehensive suite of interconnection and digital infrastructure services in the new data centers, including Equinix Connect, Equinix Internet Exchange, Metro Connect, Equinix Fabric, and Network Edge. Clients in India will be able to connect in real time, directly and privately to more than 10,000 enterprises through Platform Equinix, including more than 1,800 networks and 3,000 cloud and IT service providers.
Clients of GPX India
Equinix’s entry into India will open doors for Indian firms looking to develop worldwide as well as multinational corporations looking to grow and innovate in the Indian market.
Clients of GPX India will now have access to Platform Equinix’s global capabilities. OPPO for example, a major worldwide smart device brand, has deployed in MB2 and is using Zenlayer’s IP transit and IP peering services to support its essential IT activities in India, such as the OPPO App Market Store, local official website, and end-user data. OPPO’s omnichannel strategy in India and worldwide development aspirations would be aided by Equinix’s acquisition, as it will be able to quickly replicate its digital infrastructure with Equinix in India to any place via Equinix’s global platform.
Manoj Paul, who has over 25 years of expertise in IT and telecom infrastructure, has been named Managing Director of Equinix India. Prior to joining Equinix, he was the CEO of GPX India, where he helped the company become a renowned carrier-neutral and cloud-dense data center in India. Mr. Paul spent 11 years with Bharti Airtel Ltd, his latest position being Chief Operating Officer (Enterprises) for the Western area, before joining GPX India.
“Extending Platform Equinix to India with the addition of two world-class, highly interconnected data centers provides a platform for additional expansion across the country, and I am excited about the opportunities ahead for Equinix,” said Manoj Paul, Managing Director, Equinix India. “With the global footprint of Equinix and the industry’s largest ecosystem, we are well-positioned to be a critical part as well as a driving force of the digital revolution in India, helping businesses to leap forward domestically and globally.”
Platform Equinix operates over 230 data centers in 65 metro areas and 27 countries, offering data center and interconnection services to more than 10,000 organizations, including more than half of the Fortune 500. Equinix now operates 49 of its IBX colocation data centers throughout 13 metros in Asia-Pacific, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.
“India presents enormous opportunities for digital leaders in Asia-Pacific,” said Jeremy Deutsch, President, Equinix Asia-Pacific. “Bringing Platform Equinix to India not only solidifies Equinix’s position as the leading digital infrastructure provider in Asia-Pacific, but also provides a new option to local enterprises and multinationals operating in India to interconnect and manage their digital infrastructure in Mumbai. We believe our global expertise and unique interconnection ecosystem will continue to empower businesses in India.”
