Equinix, a global provider of colocation data centers and interconnection services, has announced a $50 million investment in a brand-new International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Montreal, Canada. The new data center, known as MT2, will increase Equinix’s footprint in Montreal and uphold the firm’s dedication to providing Canadian companies with the complete benefits of Platform Equinix and its array of solutions.

The MT2 facility is expected to debut in the second half of 2023 and will increase Equinix’s Canadian presence to 16 IBX data centers coast to coast.

Montreal, known for its high percentage of tech workers and its position as a global leader in sectors such as Visual Effects (VFX), gaming, financial services, and aerospace, is a significant economic hub for both Canada and the rest of the world, stated Equinix. The Global Interconnections Index 2023, a study released by Equinix, predicts that Montreal will experience one of the quickest rates of growth among peripheral metros worldwide, with its connectivity capacity expected to increase by a 46% CAGR by 2025.

Andrew Eppich, Managing Director of Equinix Canada, said, “MT2 represents a major milestone in our investment to bring the best of Equinix to Canada and the best of Canada to the world. By increasing our presence in this region, we can provide businesses with the best-in-class data center architecture, access to global connectivity, and connectivity within Canada, allowing them to advance their digital infrastructure and innovation journeys both domestically and internationally.”

The Paris Agreement 1.5-Degree Scenario

In addition to providing Canadian businesses with the complete “benefits of” Platform Equinix and its array of solutions, the new location will offer customers tools like Equinix Fabric and Equinix Internet Exchange, which will enable them to link immediately to clients, collaborators, and services in more than 50 urban areas worldwide. The new location will increase colocation capacity by more than 37,000 square feet and provide international access.

The MT2 colocation data center in Montreal is designed to support Equinix’s efficiency commitment to sustainable air-cooling practices. It is anticipated to be one of the first data centers to align the operating temperature boundaries with the internationally recognized standards outlined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) A1A. Enhancing data center effectiveness through the optimization of refrigeration operations can lower clients’ Scope 3 carbon emissions related to the implementation of MT2.

Equinix was one of the first businesses in the data center sector to make a commitment to becoming climate neutral worldwide across Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. This commitment was made in combination with an authorized near-term science-based goal to decrease emissions and linked to the Paris Agreement 1.5-degree scenario. The business has also pledged to have 100% of its worldwide assets powered by green energy by 2030.
