Global colocation and interconnection provider Equinix (Nasdaq: EQIX) is constructing its second data center in Barcelona as the metro area develops into a critical hub for the terrestrial and subsea cable networks linking our digital lives. Given the spike in demand Equinix is witnessing from businesses in Barcelona and around the Mediterranean, the data center operator argues that the timing of this investment could not be better.

“The potential for Barcelona to become a dense and valuable strategic hub cannot be overstated,” said Judith Gardiner, VP for Growth and Emerging Markets at Equinix.

Equinix’s new colocation facility, to be known as the BA2 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center, will be located adjacent to the company’s existing BA1 site, forming a campus and dense digital ecosystem.

It would increase the Barcelona’s much needed digital capacity to support local firms’ growth and expansion while also enticing foreign companies to establish or develop on Platform Equinix in Barcelona.

“Addressing digital demand sustainably is of vital importance, and something we are focused on at Equinix. The timing of this investment couldn’t be better, given the surge in demand we are seeing from companies in Barcelona and across the Mediterranean,” said Judith Gardiner, Vice President for Growth and Emerging Markets at Equinix. “The potential for Barcelona to become a dense and valuable strategic hub cannot be overstated, and we are delighted to be able to serve this great city by adding it to our strategy to galvanize our position as the connectivity core of the Mediterranean.”

Subsea Cables Coming Ashore

With Barcelona swiftly emerging as a crucial subsea center, the new Equinix data center location would act as a strategic connection point for data connections between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

The Europe Middle East India cable by Aqua Comms, which will connect Barcelona with Salalah and Mumbai; the Medloop by Sipartech, which will connect Barcelona with Ajaccio, Genoa, and Marseille; and the Medusa cable, which will connect Barcelona with Lisbon and a number of significant Mediterranean, European, and African metropolises, are among the major cables available in Barcelona.

Equinix’s worldwide infrastructure of more than 245 colocation data centers, which includes important Mediterranean metros including Bordeaux, Genoa, Lisbon, and Milan, would further support this significant digital connectivity ecosystem.

“Subsea cables play a vital role in enabling the modern digital world, and we anticipate much progress in the next couple of years following the pandemic-induced backlog,” said Jim Poole, Vice President at Equinix. “Subsea cables provide the underlying capacity between metros on different continents, while Equinix democratizes that capacity, making it easily accessible to a wide range of businesses and enabling rapid international expansion without the need for significant CAPEX investment.”
