FirstLight Establishes 400 Gbps Network Connection with Ciena

“LightRiver continues to believe that bringing best-of-class technology from Ciena to top-quality operators like FirstLight yields tremendous business advantages,” said Dean Campbell, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at LightRiver.

Fiber-optic solutions provider FirstLight, a company delivering fiber-optic data, Internet, data center, cloud, Unified Communications, and managed services to business and carrier clients in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, has deployed its first 400 Gbps link on its fiber optic network.

This capability was made possible in part by LightRiver, a provider of optical network integration solutions for next-generation, multi-vendor Factory Built Networks and netFLEX Optical Domain Orchestration and Control Software solutions.

With high network capacity and ultra-low latency at the heart of FirstLight’s fiber strategy, this upgrade represents a significant milestone for the firm. FirstLight’s network is built to meet the ever-increasing need for bandwidth. This upgrade not only allows FirstLight to keep up with client demand, but it also prepares the network to handle 5G technology.

“Launching a 400 Gbps connection on our network is a landmark achievement for the FirstLight team,” said Brandon Peyton, Chief Network Officer at FirstLight. “Businesses’ increased reliance upon collaboration and 5G has fed the growing need for bandwidth across industries. Given the projected growth of these technologies, I am confident this is just the beginning of deployments of this scale for FirstLight as the network can easily scale to 800 Gbps and beyond.”

Real-Time Insight Network Performance

“Ciena’s 6500 platform powered by WaveLogic coherent optics will make it possible for FirstLight to provide 400-800 Gbps connectivity over its existing backbone and metro networks,” said Scotty Benda, Vice President of Americas Sales Systems Engineering for Ciena. “It allows for rapid rollout of high-capacity, low-latency services to quickly and reliably satisfy customers’ needs.”

Furthermore, using Ciena’s Manage, Control, and Plan (MCP) and Liquid Spectrum applications, FirstLight obtains real-time insight into network performance as well as the ability to proactively improve and safeguard the network from any failures.

“LightRiver continues to believe that bringing best-of-class technology from Ciena to top-quality operators like FirstLight yields tremendous business advantages,” said Dean Campbell, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at LightRiver. “FirstLight’s deployment of 400G services over advanced Ciena technologies marks another win for our collaboration, as well as for FirstLight’s customers.”
