How to complete COMODO verification using the HTTP method


There are various ways to complete an SSL domain control validation process out of which one of the methods is using the “HTTP” validation. So, let us see how we can proceed with the Domain Control Validation of your SSL certificate using the HTTP method:
Generating CSR : Once an order for the SSL certificate is placed you will have to proceed by generating CSR, the CSR can be generated on Linux and Windows environment as below:

On Linux shared hosting :
Login to the cPanel for the domain
Under the Security tab click on SSL/TLS option
Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.
Enter the details and click on Generate

Note: Please ensure that the email address being used is a valid one as the certificate will be issued on this email address.

Further, make sure you right correct common name as for example “abc.com” for positive SSL, Comodo SSL, EV SSL and “ *.abc.com ” for positive wildcard SSL.

On Windows shared hosting:
Login to the Plesk panel for the domain ( https://goo.gl/68zM57 )
Click on SSL/TLS Certificates option
Click on Add SSL/TLS Certificate
Enter the details and click on Request
Please note: When you generate the CSR, a private key is also generated along with it. Make sure you make a note of it.

Submitting the CSR:
After the CSR is generated, you need to provide the CSR to issue and complete the verification process.

You can submit the CSR as follows:
For Reseller Account :
Click on Product – List All Orders – Search your domain in the “Search Box” – Click on your domain name. Next, Scroll down to “SSL Certificate” Section – Click on Issue Certificate

For Customer Account:
Click on Manage Orders – List/Search Orders – Search your domain in the “Search Box” – Click on your domain name. Next, Scroll down to “SSL Certificate” Section – Click on Issue Certificate

Enter the CSR on the page and select the verification Email to be used for verification of the SSL. You can select any one of the following Emails:

[email protected]
[email protected]

Please note: You can select any email address as we are proceeding with the HTTP based verification. The reason we select the email address on this step and submit is that our application for the SSL certificate is sent to the CA which is a certificate authority.

Generating CSR hashes:
Visit https://secure.comodo.com/utilities/decodeCSR.html
Enter the CSR and make sure you click on the checkbox of “Show CSR Hashes” and click on Decode.
The output will give you MD5 and SHA-256 Hashes.

Creating the TXT file to complete the HTTP verification :
The TXT file name should be the same as the MD5 as you have got in the previous steps, For Eg: If MD5= 7D52110A15253B5C11EF2F2957D2B0D2, then the text file which you will create using any text editor (Like notepad) should be “7D52110A15253B5C11EF2F2957D2B0D2.txt”
Once you have created the text file with name MD5.txt, open it and paste the content as below:
SHA-256
comodoca.com
For example: If SHA-256= D92E3FF1B67E969F64793D6BDBCE490C , then the text file will have the content as below:
D92E3FF1B67E969F64793D6BDBCE490C
comodoca.com

Uploading the TXT file on the webserver:
Linux Shared Hosting :
Login to the cPanel for the domain
Visit File Manager, now navigate to public_html folder.
Create the folder under “public_html” folder as “. well‐known ”
Next, enter the folder “.well-known” and create another folder under it with the name “pki‐validation”.
Now, upload the TXT file which you have created under this folder using “Upload” option.
Your file should be located as: public_html/.well‐known/pki‐validation/md5.txt
You can test the file by using URL: http://example.com/.well‐known/pki‐validation/ md5.txt
Here, example.com = your domain name and md5.txt = your txt file name.

Windows Shared Hosting :
Login to the Plesk Panel for the domain
Visit File Manager, now navigate to httpdocs folder.
Create the folder under “httpdocs” folder as “. well‐known ”
Next, enter the folder “.well-known” and create another folder under it with the name “pki‐validation”.
Now, upload the TXT file which you have created under this folder using the “Upload” option.
Your file should be located as: httpdocs/.well‐known/pki‐validation/md5.txt
You can test the file by using URL: http://example.com/.well‐known/pki‐validation/ md5.txt
Here, example.com = your domain name and md5.txt = your txt file name.
