There are a zillion tools and plugins available to help users manage their WordPress websites including moving to a new host.
One such tool is the Duplicator that helps WordPress users to migrate, copy, clone or move WordPress to a new host and also serves as a simple backup utility. Standard WordPress migration and WordPress backups to move a WordPress site to new host are easily handled with zero downtime during migration.
This video takes you through the steps on how to migrate WordPress site to new host using the Duplicator plugin.
How does it migrate WordPress to new host? The Duplicator plugin creates an installation file and an archive file of existing files and database, then move these files to the new server. The duplicator installer file on the destination will unpack and install everything and will help move website to a new host.
Know how to migrate wordpress site to new host using the Duplicator plugin with these steps:
1) Prepare the existing WordPress website for migrations.
Login to your WordPress dashboard, install and activate the Duplicator plugin. (wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/)
Go to Duplicator – Packages – Create new package and create a package with all the essential file required on the new server.
Now, enter the Name of the package – click on Next and the Duplicator plugin will scan your website and will show you details like:
. Extra large files
. Any other warnings
If you see any error, fix it, click on ReScan to let Duplicator plugin scan your site again. Note that a size check notice will be triggered at 150MB and can be ignored on most hosts.
We recommend to check and remove all the backup files or any unwanted files to reduce the disk space usage of your existing WordPress hosting account before you move website to new host.
Once the unwanted files are removed, click on Build and the tool will create a package with the installer file and an archive file.
The time taken to complete the process will depend on the size of your site that you wish to migrate wordpress to a new host
Download both the Installer and the Archive file which you need to move to the new WordPress Hosting package while you move wordpress site to new host.
2) Preparing the new WordPress Hosting package with us for Migration:
Go to your WordPress Hosting Manager- Click on Install WordPress button.
On the Install WordPress page enter the details – click on the Add Site button.
Once the installation is complete, go to WordPress Hosting Manager – More – Manage FTP and create a new FTP Account for your package.
Save the FTP Username, IP Address and password details.
Access the newly created FTP account via your favorite FTP client (We prefer FileZilla) and download the wp-config.php file to your local system.
Open the above wp-config.php file in your favourite editor and note down the following MySQL settings for your WordPress hosting account.
DB_NAME
DB_USER
DB_PASSWORD
DB_HOST
Note that this is important because we require the database details provided in this file to move WordPress site to new host.
You can delete all the existing files including the above wp-config.php file on your new WordPress Hosting package via FTP.
3) Starting the Migration process
Upload the installer.php file and the archive file in .zip format which we downloaded in Step 1 to the newly created FTP account on our WordPress Hosting Account.9
Edit your local PC’s hosts file to temporarily map the domain name to the IP Address of new WordPress Hosting package or use the Google Chrome extension Virtual Hosts plugin.
Resolve your website yourdomainname.com/installer.php.
On this page, accept the terms and notices, click on next.
Enter the Database Details taken from the wp-config.php file on the Step 1, Click Next.
On the Next Page, Enter the New Settings and Click on Next.
That’s it! The installation will complete soon and you would have been able to move WordPress site to new host.
You can access the site on the new WordPress Hosting Server by calling the domain name on the browser. (The domain will point to the new server as long as you keep the “hosts” file entries).
Once everything is working properly, you can then point your domain DNS to the WordPress Hosting Account (https://india.resellerclub.com/wordpress-hosting). You can find the DNS details from WordPress Hosting Manager – DNS.
