IBM Migrates Its Global IT Infrastructure to SAP S/4HANA

Designed to fuel the company’s growth and better support its clients, IBM is currently undertaking one of the world’s largest corporate IT transformation projects based on SAP ERP software. The project will leverage RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition, premium supplier option with IBM Consulting to improve business operations.

More than 375 TB of data will be moved to IBM Power on Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM Cloud at the end. RISE with SAP puts together everything a company would need to achieve their digital transformation goals and speed their cloud migration.

RISE with SAP is assisting IBM in centralizing and standardizing data globally, driven by the need to modernize processes and give greater insights to serve customers running on the cloud.

Data may be accessed in real time and shared more effectively throughout business divisions and teams with access to the SAP HANA database. Improved decision-making will be aided by AI and automated workflows as a result of the extended relationship. When the transformation is complete, SAP software will account for virtually all of IBM’s $58 billion in revenue.

RISE with SAP

“This expanded partnership will enable IBM to accelerate its business transformation in the cloud and fuel its future growth,” said Christian Klein, CEO and Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE. “As a result, IBM will be positioned to provide the highest value of support and flexibility to its clients, allowing them to simplify and accelerate their business transformations while benefitting from the full value of RISE with SAP.”

With the RISE with SAP solution on IBM Power on Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM Cloud, this business transformation will eventually relocate over 300 SAP instances and combine 500 servers. The company’s software business segment has already begun the migration to SAP S/4HANA. The initial deployment is centered on IBM’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and billing system. According to IBM, clients and IBM business partners are already benefiting from simpler billing and payment systems, as well as the ability to execute orders and contracts rapidly.

IBM Consulting is spearheading the transformation by offering the advising, implementation, security, industry, and technical skills necessary to convert these complex systems and applications to a digital environment, with over 38,000 highly skilled SAP experts.

“Enterprise clients are seeking increased choice and control as they modernize their mission-critical workloads. Enabled by RISE with SAP, this is a milestone business transformation initiative for both companies due to its complexity and scale,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at IBM. “With this move, and IBM’s experience using RISE with SAP internally, we will be even better prepared to support our clients on their hybrid cloud and business transformation journeys.”

“Enabled by RISE with SAP, this is a milestone business transformation initiative for both companies due to its complexity and scale,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO at IBM.

IBM is making the same cloud-based computing capacity that underpins its own migration available to customers, especially those in highly regulated sectors, to offer them with more flexibility and computational power. Clients that use RISE with SAP on IBM Cloud now have the option of running workloads on IBM Power on Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM Cloud, thanks to an increase of the premium supplier option.

IBM was the first cloud provider to offer infrastructure, technical managed services, business transformation, and application management as part of RISE with SAP as a premium supplier. With customers increasingly relying on hybrid cloud solutions to upgrade their workloads, IBM and SAP are enabling clients running Power servers to utilize RISE with SAP S/4HANA on Power infrastructure in the same way they do on premise.

Organizations using IBM Power on IBM Cloud, which is based only on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, would be able to achieve high levels of performance in a cloud environment for their mission-critical applications, thanks to IBM and Red Hat’s “flexibility, resilience, and security” features.
