Lenovo Unveils VMware for the Edge on ThinkSystem SE350 Edge Servers

Lenovo is bringing VMware’s edge software solution to the ThinkSystem SE350 Edge Servers, which are built to last. The VMware software solution will be pre-loaded on a pair of ruggedized and security upgraded ThinkSystem SE350s and delivered straight to client edge sites.

VMware’s next edge software solution will operate on the ThinkSystem SE350. With built-in switching and wireless connection, this solution would simplify networking by removing the need for external network equipment at the edge and enabling for smoother and more fluid operation. Clients that buy this integrated and pre-loaded package would soon be able to enjoy the same environment they have in their data center, right at their edge locations.

This innovative solution is ideal for remote sites such as retail outlets, industrial plants, and schools, to mention a few, that need to analyze data closer to its source and users. This solution will be able to withstand severe temperatures and high levels of stress because to the ruggedized nature of the ThinkSystem SE350. In addition, encrypted hard drives will be used, as well as motion and tamper detection, to assist keep the data and device safe.

“It can save up to half of the servers normally needed and takes full advantage of the built-in networking features of the ThinkSystem SE350 to further remove any other networking elements at the edge sites,” said Charles Ferland, VP and GM, Edge Computing and Communication Service Providers at Lenovo ISG.

“For better business continuity, improved applications and user experiences, hybrid cloud models are being deployed both in the cloud and at the edge. The new solution announced today supports this hybrid model,” said Charles Ferland, Vice President and General Manager, Edge Computing and Communication Service Providers at Lenovo ISG. “It can save up to half of the servers normally needed and takes full advantage of the built-in networking features of the ThinkSystem SE350 to further remove any other networking elements at the edge sites.”

The deployment of remote edge locations necessitates a management toolset that allows businesses to automate operations without the need for specialist personnel on-site. Lenovo has improved its Lenovo Open Cloud Automation software solution to incorporate edge-supported functionality, allowing clients with cutting-edge management capabilities to achieve faster time to value. This single interface would simplify the planning, deployment, and lifecycle management of the physical and virtual infrastructure necessary to run cloud applications in data centers and at thousands of edge locations.
