Mirantis and CoreOS Deliver First Commercial Kubernetes and OpenStack

OpenStack cloud company, Mirantis, and CoreOS have announced the integration of Mirantis OpenStack with CoreOS’ Tectonic, the first commercial platform for Kubernetes 1.0. The joint effort would bring enterprise-grade support and manageability to companies looking to combine the agility of OpenStack with the portability of Kubernetes and container technologies.

Kubernetes is an open source system for managing Google-scale containerized applications across multiple hosts, providing basic mechanisms for deployment, maintenance, and scaling of applications. It is lightweight, portable, extensible and self-healing.

Tectonic combines Kubernetes and the CoreOS stack in a commercial distribution, prepackaged with an enterprise-ready management dashboard, an integrated container registry and a supported, continuously up-to-date distributed platform.

mirantis-openstack-cloud“Mirantis and CoreOS share a vision of helping DevOps teams create better software faster,” said Mirantis CMO and co-founder, Boris Renski. “Putting Kubernetes on top of OpenStack gives them flexibility in how they build their applications, letting them innovate quickly. We are thrilled to be working with Google and CoreOS, and look forward to hearing more from them about how enterprises can leverage containers with OpenStack at OpenStack Silicon Valley.”

CoreOS’ Tectonic combines Kubernetes and the CoreOS software portfolio in an integrated package, including a management console for workflows and dashboards, an integrated registry to build and share Linux containers, and additional tools to automate deployment and customize rolling updates. Tectonic runs on-premises or in public clouds hosting environments.

“OpenStack is quickly becoming the preferred open source cloud platform for a range of technologies – VMs, containers, bare metal and whatever comes next,” said Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation. “Project contributors like CoreOS, Mirantis and Google are helping the community offer enterprises a cohesive open source cloud solution powered by OpenStack.”

‘Google-like Infrastructure’

Mirantis has helped build and deploy some of the largest OpenStack clouds in the world, at companies such as Cisco, Comcast, Ericsson, NASA, Samsung and Symantec. The company is venture-backed by Insight Venture Partners, August Capital, Ericsson, Intel Capital, Sapphire Ventures and WestSummit Capital, with headquarters in Mountain View, California.

“Now that Kubernetes is production-ready, companies using Tectonic and Mirantis OpenStack can have a Google-like infrastructure at their fingertips,” said CoreOS CEO, Alex Polvi. “Mirantis possesses a deep understanding of open source software and their commitment to the open source ecosystem around OpenStack is second to none. It was natural to work with Mirantis to help customers see the benefits of Kubernetes on OpenStack.
