MongoDB, a Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) company that secured $150 million in financing a couple of years ago, has announced greatly expanded global support for MongoDB Atlas, which is now available in 14 Amazon Web Services (AWS Cloud) regions. Up from five regions previously, the platform now covers the Americas, APAC, and EMEA, giving organizations better control over where their data lives.
The new AWS Cloud regional capabilities would allow customers to deploy their cloud databases locally for better performance, reduced costs and improved regulatory compliance. Local, in-region backups are currently available in Dublin and the US Northeast, with comprehensive coverage planned for the end of 2017.
“MongoDB is already the most popular non-relational database on the market today, and MongoDB Atlas is quickly emerging as the most popular option for developers who need a highly available, secure, elastic, on-demand service,” said Sahir Azam, Vice President, Cloud, at MongoDB. “In less than a year on the market, we’ve seen remarkable traction with developers and large enterprises.”
In addition, a new live migration service would make it easy for customers to migrate existing MongoDB deployments to MongoDB Atlas.
Customers like table-booking service and venue management system, Tablelist, leveraged the migration service to “seamlessly” import their data into MongoDB Atlas with no downtime.
“With our previous third party MongoDB service provider, we could not perform minor version updates to the database without having our database go offline,” said Andrew Barba, Director of Product and Engineering, Tablelist, “With MongoDB Atlas’ live migration capabilities, we were able to migrate our entire data layer to MongoDB Atlas with zero downtime to our application. And now we get the benefits of a MongoDB service built and run by the team that engineers the database technology.”
