CloudFlare, a global CDN and DNS provider based in San Francisco, CA, has significantly expanded its points of presence (POPs) in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific through multiple Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers: Amsterdam, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Seattle, Silicon Valley, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto and Washington, D.C.
The CDN expansion, which more than doubles CloudFlare’s footprint within Equinix’s data centers and leverages the density of its interconnections to cloud partners and customers, is part of CloudFlare’s strategy to bolster its global presence, enhance security and optimize the performance of its cloud-based content delivery network (CDN).
In 2010, CloudFlare first deployed its network in Equinix’s Chicago, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. data centers. Since that initial deployment, CloudFlare has established POPs in over 15 markets across North America, Asia and Europe. By more than doubling its CDN footprint across Platform Equinix, CloudFlare now aims to keep pace with its growing customer base and the rise in Web traffic passing through its network.
Mitigating distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on CloudFlare’s servers is another driving force behind CloudFlare’s expansion. Leveraging Equinix’s global footprint, CloudFlare can more effectively absorb and disperse massive volumes of Web traffic associated with DDoS attacks to better ensure uptime.
100 data centers globally
“Equinix has been a key partner to us every step of the way,” said Joshua Motta, director of special projects, CloudFlare. “No other company would have been able to help us scale as quickly as Equinix did on a global level. Becoming a part of the greater CDN ecosystem through Equinix, and taking advantage of its platform and connectivity options, enables us to better serve our existing customers and grow our business within new geographies and industries.”
Upon CloudFlare’s initial deployment with Equinix, 20 percent of the world’s population was geographically located 10 milliseconds away from the nearest CloudFlare data center. Today, after its global expansion, that figure would have vaulted to 95 percent of the world’s population residing not more than 10 milliseconds away from a CloudFlare CDN PoP.
Equinix’s globally dispersed network of more than 100 data centers currently connects more than 4,500 companies in 32 strategic markets across the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific.
