Data center supplier Minkels, part of the publicly traded company Legrand (NYSE Euronext Paris: LR), has recently extended its data center product portfolio with Drop Away Panels. Meanwhile, these panels have been ‘FM Approved’ (in class 4651 – Suspended Plastic Ceilings) by FM Approvals, the testing arm of international insurance carrier FM Global.
Minkels introduced its Drop Away Panels in 2016 to increase fire safety in data centres. “Drop Away Panels are specifically designed roof panels for aisle containment,” said Bas Jacobs, Product Manager Minkels. “In case of fire in the data centre, the Drop Away Panels automatically soften and drop down so that they won’t be an obstacle before the sprinklers (1) are activated.”

The greatest demand for Minkels’ Drop Away Panels would currently come from the United States and the United Kingdom – where insurance contracts for data center buildings demand that sprinkler and water mist systems are used. According to Minkels, it is expected that the regulations for data center buildings will soon be tightened up in countries such as Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
“Standardization in the field of data center security is already being tightened considerably (e.g. the renewed European data center standard, EN 50600),” said Mr. Jacobs. “Therefore, we expect a boost in the demand for Drop Away Panels.”
FM Global Testing
“FM Approvals – the testing arm of international insurance carrier FM Global – rigorously tests products at the FM Global Research Campus, home to state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories,” said Mr. Jacobs. “Products with the ‘FM Approved’ mark meet the highest standards for safety and property loss prevention. Minkels is the only data center supplier in Europe that has received FM Approval in class 4651 (Suspended Plastic Ceilings). Minkels is enormously pleased with the certification. It is a confirmation of our commitment to quality and safety in the data center environment.”
Minkels will present its product portfolio – including the Drop Away Panels – on several exhibitions worldwide. Among others, Minkels will attend Data Centre World (DCW) in London, March 15-16, 2017 and CeBIT in Hannover, March 20-24, 2017.
