Nokia is taking some major steps in the field of creating cloud-based 5G radio solutions. Recently, it has collaborated with two of the industry leaders including Google and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to perform extensive research and come out with the best customer-focused 5G solutions.

The main focus of the collaboration is to create an innovative proof of concept (PoC). These PoCs will be used to explore different conditions and enable Cloud RAN and other similar technologies. Basically, both the collaborations are intended to revolutionize the 5G radio solutions for businesses globally.

Nokia And Google’s Partnership

The partnership between Nokia and Google will focus on major workstreams. One of the most important ones out of that will focus on Cloud RAN and will work in combination with Nokia’s 5G vDU (Virtualized Distributed Unit) and 5G vCU (Virtualized Centralized Unit) with Google’s top-notch computing platform running on Anthos. Google Cloud Anthos platform will also be used for testing Nokia’s 5G standalone network with vCU and 5G core as a cloud-native development.

Nokia, with this step, is aiming to expand its ecosystem of partners and the company will also provide a helping hand to CSPs for lower deployment and operational costs, which will work as an advantage for monetizing 5G deployments. Both the tech giants will be looking forward to exploring new technologies and solutions that will help them in growing their joint 5G Cloud RAN and edge cloud solutions.

It is almost sure that Nokia will put efforts to certify its Nokia AirFrame Open Edge hardware with Anthos. Nokia AirFrame Open Edge disperses computing capacity into the edge of the network and drives the implementation of Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), Cloud RAN, and 5G. Global VP of Telco, Media and Entertainment Industry Solutions at Google Cloud, George Nazi, said that the organization is completely dedicated to providing solutions with the help of world-class engineering that may help their customers in achieving their requirements and let them take complete advantage of 5G.

Nokia And AWS’ Partnership

This partnership is going to be beneficial for both companies. The engineering teams from both organizations will research how the integration of Nokia’s RAN (Radio Access Network), Cloud RAN, edge solutions, and Open RAN can work smoothly with AWS Outposts. The integration will also deliver 5G connectivity to communications service providers (CSPs) to use AWS across the topology of mobile networks.

Various operators will get the accessibility to make the network visualization and platforms layers for the Core and RAN network functions in a simple way. Moreover, this is going to help enterprises in achieving their expected business outcomes for the new 5G cases developed by AWS ISV Partners.

The integration between Nokia and AWS will allow the former to take advantage of AWS services like AWS Outposts, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), AWS Local Zones, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), and others to automate network functionality. In addition to that, it will also help in ending customer application deployment, management, and scaling.

Majorly, the Nokia AWS partnership will cover three areas. The first one is to focus on getting Nokia’s 5G vDU (Virtualised Distributed Unit) onboarded and validated on AWS Outposts utilizing Amazon EKS for on-premises deployments. Second one is to implement Nokia’s 5G vCU (Virtualised Centralized Unit) with AWS Local Zones, AWS Outposts, by using Amazon EKS as a cloud-native deployment.

Third one is to create a proof of concept (PoC) for an end-to-end solution with Nokia’s 5G Cloud RAN and 5G standalone Core network running on AWS. In this way, enterprise users can also take the advantage of 5G for cases such as an industrial application.
