“The Eindhoven/Brabant region is one of the fastest growing innovation regions of the Netherlands and is a key location for companies developing new services for digital transformation,” said Alexandra Schless, CEO at NorthC Datacenters.

NorthC Datacenters, the largest data center company in the Netherlands, has started construction of a new colocation data center in Eindhoven. The new data center will have a total area of over 4000m2 and will open in October 2023. In addition to the existing data center at Eindhoven High Tech Campus (HTC), this will be the second NorthC data center in the Eindhoven/Brabant region and the company’s twelfth facility in the Netherlands.

The new NorthC data center in Eindhoven will have a capacity of 4.5MW. The latest technological innovations are being used for this new colocation data center in the Netherlands. For example, this data center will be equipped with advanced emergency power generators that can run on both hydrogen and natural gas. Ultimately, this would save 75 tons of CO2 on an annual basis compared to standard diesel generators, according to NorthC. It would be equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of 37 passenger cars on an annual basis (at an average of 11,000 km per year, source: CBS).

The use of hybrid generators would ensure that the data center is prepared for future connection to the infrastructure required for the transport, storage and use of green hydrogen.

NorthC claims that its colocation data center in Groningen, the Netherlands, is currently the only data center in Europe that uses hydrogen fuel cells for backup power. Because the new data center in Eindhoven will be larger, the eventual savings in CO2 emissions there would be greater.

“The Eindhoven/Brabant region is one of the fastest growing innovation regions of the Netherlands and is a key location for companies developing new services for digital transformation,” said Alexandra Schless, CEO at NorthC Datacenters. “Our existing colocation data center at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven still has limited capacity available, which is why we are now building a second data center for both existing and new customers. During construction we will continue our efforts to achieve maximum sustainability in every possible way. This is in line with our ambition to operate completely CO2 neutral in 2030. In this way, we also help our customers achieve their sustainability goals, because their IT environment will run significantly more efficiently and sustainably in this data center than in their own data center.”

Residual Heat

For the new colocation data center in Eindhoven, NorthC uses sustainable cooling systems that do not consume drinking water and the new data center is prepared to exchange residual heat with other companies at GDC Eindhoven-Acht. The licensing process took full account of the municipality’s zoning plans and all applicable environmental regulations.

The new colocation data center will be directly connected to NorthC’s existing data center in Eindhoven and will also be connected to the Region Connect Ring of NorthC Datacenters, which connects all the company’s data center locations in the Netherlands with each other via its own high-speed fiber optic connection.

With eleven interconnected data centers, NorthC is the largest data center operator and colocation provider in the Netherlands. In addition, NorthC has two data centers in southern Germany and three in Switzerland. NorthC’s customers include large organizations and government agencies as well as cloud and IT service providers and smaller enterprises. NorthC anticipates to operate completely CO2 neutral by 2030, based on four sustainability pillars: 100% green energy, green hydrogen, optimal use of residual heat from the data centers, as well as modular data center construction.
