NTT has announced the purchase of land property in Prince William County, Gainesville, Virginia, from Lerner Enterprises, one of Washington, D.C.’s major private developers for over seventy years, for the construction of a new, large-scale data center complex with a planned capacity of 336MW.

This new site is a critical addition to NTT Global Data Centers’ rapidly expanding portfolio, extending the company’s significant position in Northern Virginia. It’s also part of NTT’s continuous worldwide growth, which includes ambitions to expand data center operations to over 1,000MW in more than 20 countries and regions by the end of 2022.

The new 103-acre campus in Prince William County will be erected along John Marshall Highway, with the first two-story structure set to open in the second quarter of 2024. With original design proposals for four large-scale buildings totaling 336MW and more than two million square feet of data center capacity, the complex will become NTT’s largest single data center campus in North America. To enable hyperscale customers, the architecture will also include specialized self-contained zones for large-footprint deployments.

“The purchase of land in Prince William County is part of a diversified strategy as we look to expand into new and important areas of growth. The development of our new campus in Virginia will be one of 14 ongoing projects taking place across the globe,” said Masaaki Moribayashi, President and Board Director at NTT. “By 2025, it is estimated that 95% of new digital workloads will be deployed on cloud-native platforms, up from 30 percent in 2021. As a result, the demand for data centers to support this shift has never been higher. As one of the largest data center providers in the world, NTT is well placed to support this reliance, and we’re focused on supporting our customers as their needs continue to change.”

In Prince William County, NTT is working to build infrastructure that is highly accessible, secure, and long-lasting. This is part of the company’s larger goal of reaching net-zero emissions across all of its data center operations by 2030. NTT also wants to make sure that by 2030, its data center portfolio is 100 percent powered by renewable energy, and it is working to improve its sustainable design standards and energy efficiency measures.

“The development of a new data center campus in Virginia is testament to our huge growth and momentum across North America”, said Doug Adams, President and CEO at NTT Ltd., Global Data Centers Americas. “This strategic purchase of land is just one of the many steps we’re taking to accelerate our data center footprint across the country. We look forward to welcoming our clients to the new campus once construction is complete.”

The new site development in Prince William County comes after a period of rapid growth for the company’s Global Data Centers segment. NTT now has a total of seven data center campuses in the United States.

NTT recently announced the inauguration of its first data center site in the Spanish market in Madrid, as well as its new hyperscale data center campus in Navi Mumbai and its largest data center in Indonesia in Jakarta, in addition to its U.S. campuses. NTT Global Data Centers is also building additional data centers in Germany, India, and Johannesburg, which will open later this year.
