NTT, a global ICT provider employing more than 50,000 people across 57 countries, is expanding its footprint in Europe by building its first data center in Spain, in Madrid. The Tier 3-compliant colocation data center is located 20 kilometers northwest of Madrid at NTT’s Európolis Business and Technology Park. When fully built up, it offers 3,600m2 of IT space to hyperscalers and business clients, with a maximum IT capacity of 6.3MW.

“The demand for data center capacity in Spain has grown strongly in recent years,” said Florian Winkler, CEO of NTT’s Global Data Centers division in EMEA.

NTT is rapidly ramping up its data center capacity throughout the world. The company attaches the greatest importance to creating a highly available, secure and sustainable infrastructure. The data center’s entire cooling approach was tailored to the mild climate of central Spain at the Madrid location: air-cooled chillers and higher cooling water temperatures cut power usage and assure the facility’s efficient operation. The facility’s first significant client installation is totally powered by renewable energy.

“Spain has become a hub for communications in southern Europe in recent years, in part due to new submarine cables,” said Araceli Pedraza, Country Managing Director at NTT Ltd. in Spain. “With our new data center in Madrid, we are actively shaping the digital future of the region. Here, companies will find a reliable, secure and sustainable home for IT infrastructures. At the same time, comprehensive connectivity ensures maximum flexibility.”

ESpanix, DE-CIX, NetIX

Companies using the new data center in Madrid would benefit from extensive connectivity options. NTT’s patented Global Data Center Interconnect (GDCI) network topology makes high-performance private connections to internet nodes like ESpanix, NetIX, and DE-CIX, as well as cloud providers like AWS, Google, Microsoft, and others, simple and quick. There are links to 2,694 cities in Spain, interconnects in France and Portugal, and significant underwater cables through Lyntia’s fiber network. In addition, fiber links exist to NTT’s Global IP Network (GIN) as well as Colt IQ, euNetworks, GTT and other international and regional providers.

“The demand for data center capacity in Spain has grown strongly in recent years,” said Florian Winkler, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NTT’s Global Data Centers division in EMEA. “Madrid is the largest data center hub in Spain and a European gateway to the world, and our investment in the region is another milestone on our global roadmap as we continue to expand our presence across the continent to meet the coverage, capacity and connectivity needs of our clients.
