NuoDB Announces General Availability of NuoDB Larks Release 2.2

NuoDB, a provider of scale-out SQL database technology, has announced the general availability of NuoDB Larks Release 2.2, featuring new resiliency and disaster recovery capabilities designed to further advance NuoDB’s inherent support for continuous availability.

“As application vendors migrate to a global, services-based model, achieving and maintaining 24/7 application uptime is a requirement rather than a luxury,” said Barry Morris, CEO and Co-Founder, NuoDB. “NuoDB Larks Release 2.2 is yet another significant step forward toward achieving a fully automated, self-healing database.”

As customers and users more frequently insist on always-on applications, organizations would need to reconsider their application architecture. Traditional notions of “high availability” seem antiquated in the face of global cloud deployments.

NuoDB’s distributed architecture supports a zero-downtime environment that is transparent to the application and enforced by service level agreements (SLAs). NuoDB Larks Release 2.2 would further improve system resiliency by providing greater control over how the database meets continuous availability objectives.

Administrators can now customize how a database automation template enforces the SLA defined by that template, by specifying restart time delays and limits after a host or engine failure. Additionally, new pre-defined alarms added in Larks alert administrators of failure conditions so that additional appropriate action can be taken.

These and other features would support the ability of NuoDB to maintain resiliency – or the ability to detect, diagnose, and recover from errors, lowered availability or reduced throughput.

In addition, NuoDB is unveiling a preview of a new Disaster Recovery Server designed to allow organizations to safeguard their data in a secondary data center. Available as an add-on to the NuoDB Enterprise Edition, this Disaster Recovery Server would ensure database integrity in the event of planned or unplanned data center outages.

Key Enhancements

NuoDB’s Larks Release 2.2 introduces a number of key enhancements designed to improve overall database performance, increase customization options, and simplify database administration, including:

  • User-defined functions (UDFs) support in SQL and Java, providing users the ability to implement custom functions that can be used in WHERE or FROM clauses.
  • New SQL optimizations and statistics to increase overall database efficiency and performance, including better query plan generation for table access paths, and the use of histograms for better join plans.
  • More customization options for automation templates, enabling users to more easily configure database templates to meet their requirements.
  • Storefront demo application includes user experience improvements to enable more realistic and robust evaluation and testing of the NuoDB database.
  • Updated platform support for RHEL, CentOS, and Docker.
