Oracle Acquires Cloud Startup StackEngine, Set to Build New 560,000 Square Foot Cloud Campus in Austin, Texas

oracle-cloudTo keep pace with rapid cloud growth, Oracle has unveiled its plans to construct a “next-generation” cloud technology campus in Austin, Texas. The company also confirmed that it will purchase housing for employees to live affordably and conveniently nearby.

StackEngine is a cloud startup that emerged from stealth in October 2014 with its plan to operationalize Docker – the open source container system. StackEngine had been recognizing the fact that it lacked an administrative layer for IT professionals to manage their containers.

StackEngine was founded by a couple of industry veterans and received 4,5 million in total during a couple of funding rounds prior to the purchase by Oracle. Terms of the acquisition by Oracle were not disclosed.

Oracle plans to collaborate with local firms to design and build the cloud campus in a phased approach that will include consolidation of its facilities from Oregon. During phase one, the 560,000 square foot complex and parking development will be constructed on the waterfront of Austin’s Lady Bird Lake. An adjacent 295-unit apartment building will be purchased for employee housing options and to support a work-life balance.

Bolstered by the new cloud campus, Oracle will continue to hire aggressively around the world and expand its team in Austin by more than 50 percent over the next few years. Job opportunities will largely be driven by growth in Oracle’s cloud sales organization, Oracle Direct. Recruitment efforts will focus on recent university graduates and technical professionals at early stages in their career.

“Austin is a natural choice for Oracle to invest and grow,” said Scott Armour, Senior Vice President, Oracle Direct. “We already have a high-performing employee base in the region, and the surrounding technology community is teeming with creative and innovative thinkers. Our state-of-the-art cloud campus will be designed to inspire, support and attract top talent – with a special focus on the needs of millennials.”
