Rostelecom and MegaFon Disconnected from London Internet Exchange

Russian telecommunications companies Rostelecom and MegaFon were unplugged from the London Internet Exchange (LINX). The speed and quality of domestic operators’ connections will not be affected now that London-based LINX has disconnected their networks. The Internet traffic will be redistributed to other Internet Exchange points according to the telcos.

In Russia, there is no fear of traffic congestion or slowdown, according to the Russian Ministry of Finance. Russian users would not suffer any consequences as a result of LINX’s decision the disconnect the telecom networks of Rostelecom and MegaFon.

In a reaction to the disconnection of their network from the London Internet Exchange, Rostelecom has stated that it will have no impact on the cooperation with Russian Internet resources. Rostelecom added it supports the reliable supply of its services to all types of consumers by ensuring stable operations of their digital infrastructure and communication networks. This includes Internet access and traffic exchange. For traffic exchange with overseas sites, the firm maintains reserves and alternative channels.

Redistribution of Internet Traffic

MegaFon claims that the amount of Internet traffic passing through the London Internet Exchange declined dramatically in recent years. It added to it this statement that Megafon, at the end of last year, itself already planned to discontinue its partnership with the LINX in 2022 while beginning a systematic redistribution of Internet traffic.

According to MegaFon, the current service blockage by LINX will have no impact on its quality of the services (QoS) being supplied.
