Global connectivity provider Telxius plans to extend its subsea cable with ultrahigh capacity called Tikal and land it in Cancun, Mexico. Tikal was announced jointly with America Movil in January 2023 to connect Puerto Barrios (Guatemala) to Boca Raton (United States). The Cancun extension project will now be independently led by Telxius, and a supply agreement has already been signed with ASN in this regard.
Tikal’s main trunk will cover a vital Caribbean route when it launches with an initial expected capacity of 380 Tbps. Mid-2026 is the projected Ready For Service (RFS) date. Now that the Cancun extension has been completed, this “next-generation” subsea cable will arrive in Mexico. It might be extended all the way to Barranquilla, in Colombia.
“The extension demonstrates Telxius’ continuous commitment to providing state-of-the-art, digital infrastructure in the Caribbean and throughout the Americas,” said Mario Martín, CEO at Telxius. “Our partners and customers benefit from an ultrahigh capacity network, low latency and enhanced resiliency. We are proud of our ongoing expansion efforts, ensuring connectivity to key digital hubs in the Americas and Europe.”
100,000 Kilometers of Underwater Fiber
The Telxius network consists of more than 100,000 kilometers of both terrestrial and underwater fiber. It also features seven “next-generation” underwater cable systems: Marea, Brusa, Dunant, Tannat, Junior, Mistral, and soon Tikal. Two of them continue the network over the Atlantic, while the other five arrive in Latin America.
With a multiterabit network of brand-new, “next-generation” subsea cables that completely service the Americas and Europe, the Telxius network is intended to link the primary digital data hubs on both sides of the Atlantic while also improving Telxius’ existing network routes.
Telefónica Infra, a major international telecommunications carrier based in Spain, is the parent company of Telxius. Established in 2016, Telxius is responsible for overseeing a vast array of towers and a global network of fiber optic undersea cables with a high capacity. Telxius is a key player in the worldwide connectivity space, providing services to a diverse clientele that includes content producers, telecom carriers, and ISPs.
