Velocix Unveils Carrier-Grade Open Caching for ISPs

Velocix, a provider of video streaming and advertising technology, has announced the debut of its carrier-grade open caching platform. It would allow broadband providers to monetize the delivery of Internet-based content through their last-mile data networks.

The new Velocix Open Caching solution provides fixed and mobile Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with the ability to participate in the value chain associated with over-the-top (OTT) video distribution, allowing them to profit from increased market interest in direct-to-consumer streaming services.

“Velocix’s Open Caching solution enables ISPs to unlock an entirely new source of recurring revenue,” said Jim Brickmeier, CPO and CMO at Velocix.

Velocix’s solution includes control plane software modifications that enable ISP networks to interface with other open-caching compatible content delivery systems, including those operated by content providers and global CDN services.

Open caching servers, which are located deep at the edge of ISP’s last-mile networks, are able to cache and distribute material on behalf of content providers for a charge. Because ISPs may place open cache servers far closer to end-users than is feasible with normal OTT distribution, video quality can be significantly improved, session start-up times can be reduced, and stream rebuffering can be almost eliminated. Subscribers will have a better viewing experience as a result of this, according to Velocix.

Private CDN

“Velocix’s Open Caching solution enables ISPs to unlock an entirely new source of recurring revenue,” said Jim Brickmeier, CPO and CMO at Velocix. “In addition to providing the carrier-grade software needed to activate open caching, we are helping ISPs to establish commercial relationships with content providers around the globe that are eager to cut their streaming costs and gain an edge in the highly competitive streaming marketplace.”

Velocix’s new open caching platform combines its hybrid-cloud CDN technology, as well as its pre-existing wholesale CDN capabilities, and builds on the company’s strong incumbency with ISPs. Clients that have previously implemented Velocix’s CDN can use add-on software licenses to stack open caching features on top of their current infrastructure. Private CDN and open caching services can share the same underlying hardware infrastructure to boost flexibility and efficiency. The company’s technology is compliant with the Streaming Video Alliance’s open caching requirements.

Velocix is part of Lumine Group, which is an operating group of Constellation Software (TSX:CSU).
