Global infrastructure and connectivity solutions vendor Vertiv has unveiled its single-phase uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) with a lithium-ion battery. These are an extension to the Vertiv’s line-interactive UPS offering. The capacities of these “highly efficient” single-phase Vertiv Edge Lithium-Ion UPS systems range from 1,500 to 3,000VA.
Lithium-ion batteries, also known as li-ion or LIB batteries, require less maintenance. This makes them highly suitable for use at the edge of networks, where IT support is only available to a limited extent. The Vertiv Edge Lithium-Ion UPS would be ideally suited for edge computing environments but also for applications in the banking, education, retail, healthcare and government sectors.
The UPS design allows the newly launched Vertiv systems to be used in tower configurations as well as rack mounted setups. The UPS models are available immediately in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
“Because of increasing digitalization, many applications are being moved to the edge of the network. There they need reliable protection against overvoltage and power outages,” said Karsten Winther, vice president of sales at Vertiv in the EMEA region. “UPS systems with lithium-ion batteries offer operational advantages and require less onsite maintenance. This translates into improved stability and cost savings for mission-critical environments in the edge and provides our customers with a wider range of options.”
Integration with Vertiv VR Rack

Lithium-ion batteries would offer one to three times longer life than valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries. This may contribute to lower total cost of ownership (TCO). The batteries are smaller and lighter and operate more efficiently at higher temperatures. In addition, they would offer longer operating life than VRLA batteries of similar capacities used in UPS systems. The Vertiv Edge Lithium-Ion UPS series offers up to ten minutes of reserve power at full load. For a standard UPS with VRLA batteries, this is only four to five minutes.
The new UPS system can be integrated with the Vertiv VR Rack (opens PDF in new window) to form a standardized IT infrastructure solution that can be easily deployed in various locations at the edge of the network.
The Vertiv Edge Lithium-Ion UPS series is supported by the Vertiv Power Insight software, which is available for free download from Vertiv’s website. With Vertiv Power Insight, users can easily monitor and manage up to 100 rack power distribution units (rPDUs) and UPS systems. The software also provides protection against shutdown of individual and virtual servers and improved visibility into, and management of, various locations at the edge. The latest version of Vertiv Power Insight provides the VMware vCenter plug-in, which optimizes power management and availability.
