Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), global provider of infrastructure solutions, has partnered with Uptime Institute to launch its prefabricated modular data center solutions (PFM). These have been qualified as TIER-Ready by the Uptime Institute.
Customers deploying Vertiv’s TIER-Ready PFM models can be sure that they will have TCCF (TIER Certification of Constructed Facility) certification very quickly. TIER-Ready certified PFM solutions are now available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The goal is to deliver them worldwide later in 2020.
SmartMod PFM infrastructure
The TIER-Ready Partnership is a strategic agreement whereby the Uptime Institute reviews specific Vertiv PFM models during the engineering process. The goal is to ensure that these solutions meet the strict requirements of the globally recognized TIER Standard of Topology. Vertiv PFM solutions with TIER-Ready recognition offer customers who have strategically chosen TIER Certified Digital Infrastructure direct support for availability and uptime.
Part of the partnership is the completion by Vertiv of Uptime Institute‘s TIER-Ready III design review for Vertiv’s SmartMod PFM infrastructure for up to ten racks and 80kW of IT load. Data centers deploying these TIER-Ready SmartMod solutions can quickly count on a TCCF from Uptime Institute.
‘Growth Market PFM Data Centers’
According to Vertiv, a PFM approach is a flexible and efficient way of utilizing data center space with significantly less on-site installation than traditionally built data centers. Vertiv also stated that PFM systems are attracting increasing interest, especially in emerging countries, as a way to quickly develop new capacity, including at the edge. This can be done without the limitations of the traditional building process and with better system integration, testing and commissioning.
According to analysts from 451 Research, the market for PFM data centers is growing by 14.4 percent each year until 2021. The market will be worth $4.4 billion by then.
TIER-Ready Data Centers

After installation, these solutions will quickly have a full TIER Certification of Constructed Facility at their disposal.”
The Uptime Institute’s TIER Standard of Topology is the de facto standard for data center reliability and resilience. The standard provides customers with the assurance that certified data centers deliver the performance promised under a variety of conditions, including a complete power outage.
The Uptime Institute launched its review program to enable PFM vendors to deliver solutions that offer the same reliability and resilience as the thousands of existing TIER Certified data centers worldwide. The TIER-Ready program streamlines the process of obtaining TCCF by reducing the engineering review time typically required for each data center installation. As a TIER-Ready PFM solution, the Vertiv SmartMod offers 80kW time and review cost savings that can benefit the customer.

Vertiv SmartMod infrastructure is a completely stand-alone, “easily” configurable and readily available PFM product range that provides rapid deployment of data center capacity. This ‘plug and play’ approach has the advantage of shortening start-up time – from months to a few days – but also reduces the potential for quality issues. The latter is because components are developed and tested off-site. This pre-integrated design means that Vertiv SmartMod would also offer more financial security because the chance of additional adjustments on-site is lower.
