UK Cloud Hosting Specialist Brightsolid to Open Aberdeen Data Center

Brightsolid, a UK based cloud hosting specialist, has started build on a new Tier III data center in Aberdeen which will be live in April 2015. The new 2200 square meter facility represents a £5 million investment and will initially comprise 200 high-density racks with capacity of 25 kW per rack.

The new data center has been designed to expand to twice this size, allowing for storage of 400 Petabytes of data. The cloud hosting provider is working with Keysource on the build, which has been designed to achieve an energy-efficient Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) of 1.25.

Keysource is an expert in energy efficiency and was selected based on its technical ability and experience in building data centers in the North East of Scotland.

EU Energy Capital

“Aberdeen is the Energy Capital of Europe, and as such requires a global technology link for the market,” said Richard Higgs CEO of Brightsolid. “We see our new Tier 3+ state-of-the-art Aberdeen data center as an opportunity to help position the city as a global tech hub.”

cloud-hosting-ukA full data center monitoring system including environmental monitoring, plant monitoring, power and PUE monitoring, Data Hall air quality monitoring and a recirculating cooling system with MERV 8 filters (as recommended by ASHRAE Standard 127 ASHRAE 2007) will be employed. This will ensure that Brightsolid’s facility and its contents will be completely operationally efficient, positioning the data center facility as an ISO Class 8 in accordance with ASHRAE guidelines.

Technical specifications of the kit used for power and energy efficiency, fire suppression and cooling are detailed below (figures are for final full design size):

  • 2N High Voltage/Low Voltage Transformer
  • N+1 Back-up power from Prime Rated Generation–to support 2Mva IT load plus associated ancillary loads
  • 2N Active/Passive power path per data hall
  • 2MW N+1 UPS System
  • 2MW N+1 Cooling system to support data hall
  • N+1 Cooling to plant rooms

Brightsolid Aberdeen will also feature a two-factor access control system and external and internal CCTV cameras, which will cover all of the main areas with 24x7x365 on-site security.

“The new facility must and will enable outstanding operational excellence whilst driving down cost,” added Higgs. “We will also be bringing our full innovation and cloud hosting range directly into Aberdeen. So this commitment is significant.”
