EDB has released its CloudNativePG offering, an open source operator optimized for Kubernetes. In addition, EDB announced the submission of a Sandbox application to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).

The CloudNativePG is created on the principles of cloud-native. It allows senior IT decision-makers to develop a foundation for the microservices-based cloud-native principles. The latest open-source Kubernetes operation would ease up the integration of the Postgres database platform in enterprise Kubernetes deployments, boosting the pace of application and service delivery and accelerating enterprise innovation.

No doubt that Kubernetes has completely changed the way enterprises globally build, deploy, and manage large scale applications through containers. The obstacles of managing and taking advantage of the data within containerized applications have become resistance to using Kubernetes in multiple application scenarios. CloudNativePG offers a community-managed, open-source solution for data-centric applications on Kubernetes.

Open Source

The open-source Kubernetes operator was created with DevOps and Agile development in mind to help end-users add technology versatility to their projects and get to market faster.

EDB is a CNCF Kubernetes Certified Services Provider, Silver Member of CNCF and the Linux Foundation and the founding sponsor of the Data on Kubernetes Community it also has a certified operator for Red Hat Open Shift. All end users who take advantage of the community version will also be able to get support for CloudNativePG from EDB with EDB’s Community 360 Subscription offering.

To help enterprise end-users with tooling, enhanced features, and support, EDB also offers EDB Postgres for Kubernetes that leverages CloudNative PG to allow end-users to use enterprise-grade support and capabilities. To sum up, EDB Postgres for Kubernetes would provide the following key features and benefits:

  • Easy access – The Kubernetes Operator covers the complete lifecycle of a Postgres database cluster along with a primary/standby architecture with the utilization of native cloud streaming replication.
  • Control over deployment – EDB Postgres for Kubernetes runs identically everywhere, either on-premises or in the cloud providing the end-users consistent and reliable experiences. This also consists of Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Automated healing and administration – If the Postgres breaks, The EDB Postgres for Kubernetes restores the functionality and protects failover, backup, switchover, recovery and rolling updates.

What others have to say?

Global lead for containerization and Kubernetes at Boehringer Ingelheim, Simon Adamczyk, said that at Boehringer, they created a strategic development of standardizing on open source technologies. After that, the organization shortlisted Postgres Operator CloudNativePG for Rapid development projects.

He further said that their Kubernetes adoption is at the beginning stage, so they are planning to go to production in the coming days. He concluded his statement by saying that it is vital for the organization to have a simplified solution ready to deploy instantly and deprecate without having to think about the issues related to licensing and lock-in.

EDB BigAnimal

EDB also announced the general availability of EDB BigAnimal on Amazon Web Services (AWS), in addition to its current availability on Microsoft Azure.

BigAnimal, EDB’s fully managed Postgres cloud database service, provides database administrators, architects, and other professionals with an enterprise Postgres solution, expert support, and the flexibility to install anywhere they want in the cloud.

“Customers turn to EDB for our ability to build and support enterprise-grade Postgres solutions at a depth unsurpassed by other Postgres providers,” said Rich Kennelly, Senior Vice President of cloud sales and marketing for EDB. “With EDB BigAnimal in both Azure and AWS, we are responding to the demand for a fully managed Postgres solution that can be deployed when and where enterprises need it.
