Fastweb, Infinera Achieve 600 Gb/s Transmission Speed Trial on Milan-Bari Network

Using Infinera’s fifth-generation ICE6 800G technology on the GX Series Compact Modular Platform, Fastweb, one of Italy’s largest telecom providers, has announced a record-breaking single-wavelength service connectivity speed trial of 600 Gb/s across Fastweb’s network, including the 1,372-kilometer Milan-Bari optical route.

Fastweb was able to expand network capacity by up to two times thanks to the programmable flexibility of Infinera’s ICE6 technology. Fastweb’s corporate and service provider clients would be able to benefit from this seamless network expansion. It would offer them with stable, ultra-high-speed capacity to satisfy rising data traffic and network bandwidth demands.

Fastweb chose Infinera’s ICE6 technology to improve its backbone network because of its demonstrated performance, which would bring considerable network value. Fastweb plans to expand its network capacity and introduce new 400 Gigabit Ethernet services across its existing infrastructure using Infinera’s ICE6 800G technology.

The ICE6 system from Infinera uses probabilistic constellation shaping and digital Nyquist subcarrier technology with dual-carrier super-channels to provide 1.2 Tb/s signal transmission over the Milan-Bari route. Fastweb’s spectral efficiency is improved, and existing capacity on its Infinera flexible-grid backbone network is increased, thanks to the integration of these technologies.

Increasing Network Capacity

“Infinera’s ICE6 solution enables network operators to meet the demands of rapid bandwidth growth by providing the greatest capacity at the greatest reach,” said Nick Walden, SVP, Worldwide Sales, Infinera.

Fastweb is convinced that its infrastructure investments are protected for years to come thanks to Infinera’s ICE6 technology. It would allow the company to strike the correct balance between maximum transmission speeds and the most capacity per fiber while maintaining the same end-of-life performance.

“Sustaining the digital transformation efforts of enterprises and meeting our customers’ need is our primary objective,” said Marco Arioli, Technology Officer at Fastweb. “We are constantly looking to improve our infrastructure to ensure we can always provide our customers with the highest bandwidth and best-quality services they need to be successful. ICE6 is a significant step forward for us, substantially increasing the capacity of our network with a smooth upgrade path and enabling us to keep up with the relentless demand for increased capacity of unpredictable bandwidth-hungry events.”

Founded in 1999, Fastweb has developed a national fiber optic network infrastructure in Italy of 56,000 kilometers. As a major Italian telecommunications operator, the company offers a wide range of voice and data services, as well as fixed communication and mobile.

“Infinera’s ICE6 solution enables network operators to meet the demands of rapid bandwidth growth by providing the greatest capacity at the greatest reach, resulting in the most cost-effective and spectrally efficient solution,” said Nick Walden, SVP, Worldwide Sales, Infinera. “We are pleased to continue to support Fastweb’s upgrade of its network infrastructure to meet today’s growing bandwidth demands.”
