Flexential Announces Major Data Center Development in Oregon

Flexential Hillsboro 3 data center

Flexential, a provider of data center colocation, cloud, and connectivity, has unveiled the company’s newest data center expansion at its site in Hillsboro, OR, just south of Portland. The project will supply an extra 54MW of capacity at complete build out to meet and surpass growing client demand on their FlexAnywhere platform. It is located next to Flexential’s Hillsboro 3 facility.

With access to several undersea cables in Flexential’s highly connected NAP of the Northwest, the new data center facility will give ecosystem partners opportunity for future expansion in the Pacific Northwest. Their clients will now have access to one of the biggest scale data center footprints in Oregon, with over 100 MW of actively installed capacity, following the expansion.

In order to quickly deploy its fourth data center in Hillsboro, Flexential will use an existing 138,000 square foot data center. Additionally, Flexential wants to build another facility as part of the new campus expansion. For both data centers to be eligible for Flexential’s Green Finance Framework, they will use a “highly efficient sustainable design” and strive to operate at 1.4 PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and zero WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness).

“As the longest-standing data center provider in Hillsboro, we are committed to providing the most flexible connectivity and capacity options for our Pacific Northwest customers, backed by Flexential’s industry-leading ability to offer a complete cloud portfolio to suit customers’ unique needs,” said Ryan Mallory, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Flexential. “It was a clear, necessary next step to expand our Hillsboro footprint as demand continues to increase in a region that offers a direct, fast connection to APAC. We look forward to the continued growth and success of this campus.”

Dense Connectivity

“It was a clear, necessary next step to expand our Hillsboro footprint as demand continues to increase in a region that offers a direct, fast connection to APAC,” said Ryan Mallory, COO at Flexential.

The newly constructed area will have a direct connection to Flexential’s highly connected Hillsboro 2 data center facility, which the business community refers to as the NAP of the Northwest. According to Flexential, their Hillsboro 2 data center has earned a reputation as being the most connected data center in Oregon because it has long been the home of the New Cross Pacific and Hawaiki subsea cables and provides access to three additional subsea cables in the market. With access to one of the biggest scale data center footprints accessible in Hillsboro, Flexential’s NAP of the Northwest interconnection hub would provide the market’s densest network access.

“We have partnered with Flexential since its initial project in 1999 in delivering cost-effective, reliable and sustainable power to enable its customers to grow their digital infrastructure deployments in the Portland region,” said Dain Nestel, Director of Growth and Commercialization at Portland General Electric. “We’re proud to support Flexential as they build out this next phase of their growth in Hillsboro.”

Flexential is on track to significantly surpass its 2022 goal of adding 33MW of new, sustainable data center development projects and providing customers access to more than 220MW and 3 million square feet of capacity, across 19 markets, by year’s end 2022.

On Flexential’s FlexAnywhere Platform, the Hillsboro data center campus serves as a key node, giving users direct access to Flexential’s hybrid offerings, including Hosted Private Cloud, Multi-tenant Cloud, Managed Public Cloud, and DRAAS offerings, as well as hyperscale public cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
